HCS SB 228 -- TOURISM TAX

SPONSOR:  Griesheimer (Sutherland)

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Local Government by a vote of 16 to 0.

This substitute allows the City of Warrenton to levy a room tax
on hotels and motels in an amount between 2% and 5% per night,
upon voter approval.

The substitute also allows Shannon County, upon voter approval,
to levy a tax no greater than 5% on lodging, campgrounds, canoe
rental, and trail rides.

All revenues derived from these taxes must be used for the
promotion of tourism.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that voters want a tax to promote
tourism in their communities.

Testifying for the bill was Senator Griesheimer.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
